Politics in the Classroom

Elections fit into the curriculum covered in Civics and some other courses. Often times schools will set up debates for candidates and participate in a mock election. Here are some resource to assist with resources you could use in the classroom.

Student Vote is a non-profit, non-partisan organization that aims to build the capacity and commitment of young Canadians to participate in their democracy. OSSTF/FEESO proudly supports Student Vote and its mission to build the citizenship skills of young Canadians. If you are interested, register your school for the Federal Election before September 30 (if your school has already been registered, it will tell you the name of the Team Leader).

Vote Compass is a civic engagement application designed by political scientists and run during election campaigns. Based on their responses to a set of policy propositions relevant to a given election campaign, users are provided with a real-time assessment of their position in the political landscape and their proximity to each of the parties included in the application. Vote Compass stimulates democratic participation by offering the electorate an opportunity to engage with and compare the policy platforms of political parties in a clear and accessible manner that addresses points of differentiation between the parties on a range of important issues.

From one easy location keep track of what your politicians are saying on social media and what regular Canadians have to say about current politics. poliTwitter not only tracks MPs & Canadian politics on Twitter but also Facebook, Youtube, flickr, blogs and hansard from parliament. poliTwitter does the searching for you maintaining a detailed list of politicians on twitter and political hash tags . You can view tweets narrowed down by partisan party affiliation, province, MPs and more. poliTwitter is a non-partisan service that strives to connect elected MPs & MLAs with the Canadian people.
